Health Coaching

It is far better to maintain wellbeing than to restore damaged health, just as it is better to put up a safety railing near a cliff than repair the broken bones of those people who fall over the edge!

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, who lived in ancient Greece said that in order to be well we need balance in six areas of our lives:

1. Food and drink- We need a variety and sufficiency of good quality food and drink, neither too much nor too little.
2. Fresh air and light- We need to breathe in unpolluted fresh air, need to feel the sun on our skin and have our living/working environment neither too hot nor too cold.
3. Activity- For health, we need daily physical activity- but not excessive exercise.
4. Elimination- We need to make sure that we empty our bowels and bladder regularly so as not to allow the build up of waste products and toxins in our bodies.
5. Sleep- We need to have the right amount of sleep to allow our bodies to rest and recover, but we should not indulge in too much sleep as this can rob us of energy.
6. Emotional and spiritual experiences- Relationships, intellectual satisfaction, faith, beautiful sensory experiences such as music and art help us feel better and improve our immunity.

The above areas are still as relevant over 2000 years later and provide the basis for good physical and emotional health. Sometimes we need help from others to achieve them. The aim of Health Coaching is to achieve Optimum Health and all of the above factors are relevant.

With Health Coaching the process is to analyse the client's current health status and then help the individual to set strategies improve their wellbeing. The strategies adopted will vary from person to person but may address any of the factors above.

Where appropriate, lifestyle changes can be backed up using Herbal remedies and therapeutic massage.

The Human body is the universe in miniature. That which cannot be found in the body is not to be found in the universe. Hence the philosopher's formula that the universe within, reflects the universe without. It follows therefore that if our knowledge of our own body could be perfect, we would know the universe:
