Each tree, shrub and herb, down even to the grasses and mosses, agreed to furnish a remedy for some one of the diseases named and each said: I shall appear to help man when he calls upon me in his need:

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy combines the benefits of therapeutic massage with the healing properties of the essential oils of plants. It involves the application of an individually prepared blend of oils with the aim of improving physical and emotional health, and achieving greater harmony and relaxation.

The basis of aromatherapy massage is touch. Touch is a natural instinct and without such contact we can become unhappy or irritable. Touch can have a powerful influence on our physical and emotional well-being. It is an innate human reaction to rub an aching muscle or to put a hand on someone who is hurt or in distress.

Aromatherapy is one of the oldest forms of medical treatment and has been used in all cultures throughout history. At last the benefits are being recognised again and many people are treating themselves to a regular aromatherapy massage both for health and pleasure.

The benefits of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy can have positive effects on both the physical and psychological levels. It is suitable for all age groups.

Physically, the different movements can affect the circulatory, digestive, nervous, muscular, eliminatory and other systems of the body. These techniques, combined with the individual properties of the different oils, can relax tense muscles, improve circulation and aid lymphatic drainage, so helping in the process of healing and detoxification. Some oils can also nourish the skin and aid with removal of dead cells.

Psychologically, aromatherapy can relieve nervous tension, reduce the impact of stress by aiding relaxation, lift the mood and result in a feeling of well-being. A treatment can sometimes cause a release of emotion and this is perfectly normal. At other times you may relax so much that you fall asleep.

The Aromatherapy process explained

If you have not had a massage before then you might have some anxieties. Some people are quite shy and this is respected. You need not worry because I will look after your safety and your modesty.

At your first appointment a detailed consultation will be carried out to ensure that it is safe to undertake the massage. Some medical conditions may make it unwise to proceed with a full treatment. If you are pregnant or have any health problems, then please call me to discuss whether this is the right treatment for you just now.

After the consultation I will blend a number of oils based on your specific needs. The treatment is then carried out. You can choose if there are any areas of your body that you would prefer not to be treated, perhaps because you have an injury or for some other reason. You set the agenda. I never forget that the time and space is there for your benefit.

Preparing for a treatment

Just bring yourself. You do not need any special clothing, but remember that oils are being used so it is best not to wear your finest clothes in case there should be staining.

Ideally, you should shower or bath before you arrive and then not use any perfume, body creams or similar preparations, as these can interfere with the oils being used. I will normally treat your face, so you might wish to remove any make-up before the appointment. Avoid eating a large meal or taking stimulants (e.g. tea or coffee) just before the treatment.

After the massage

You may well feel very relaxed so bear this in mind if you are driving home. Avoid eating a large meal, drinking alcohol, or taking caffeine for a few hours afterwards. Drink plenty of water and/or herb teas. If possible, do not bathe for 24 hours, to give the oils time to be absorbed fully. Allow yourself time to relax.

Home visits and residential care

I specialise in massaging people with special needs, especially those in residential care. I currently work with adults with learning difficulties.

Home visits can be arranged for patients who are too ill to travel.
